Concession of the DEOMAR project
Recently, the Community of Madrid has awarded the DEOMAR – DEVELOPMENT AND DEMONSTRATION OF ADVANCED SYSTEMS FOR MARINE WIND, led by Rover Maritime, through the program of “Aid to contribute to the improvement of public-private cooperation in R&D&I by means of consortium tractor projects”.
The project focuses on research, development, prototyping and experimental demonstration of new innovative subsystem solutions, novel means and newly designed processes aimed at the industrial applicability of new technologies for renewable energy generation, in particular floating offshore wind. The experimental development of these innovations is being considered through their application to a revolutionary Spanish offshore floating platform technology for the production of offshore wind energy, the WHEEL technology, thus contributing to the boost that this nascent market is expected to generate in multiple economic sectors of our country.
With patents and a development process dating back to 2015, the WHEEL technology has reached a level of development where the suitability of the fundamentals of a disruptive naval architecture has already been solidly demonstrated. The DEOMAR project focuses on experimental research and demonstration of a range of innovative elements, media and processes that will enhance and strengthen the solution’s industrial applicability and economics for future large-scale commercial projects.
The WHEEL technology offers a pioneering and revolutionary naval architecture with an unprecedented capacity for introducing into the promising market of offshore wind floating industrialization strategies from other sectors in which our country is a world leader, while enabling a radical reduction of costs and carbon footprint.
DEOMAR joins a well-trained consortium of the Community of Madrid with highly complementary specialties in the naval and civil sectors that, in collaboration with the Polytechnic University of Madrid, will address multiple lines of research, testing and demonstration that are considered decisive to optimize and cement the foundations of a future industrial application of floating wind in general and Spanish WHEEL technology in particular. All of them will jointly develop work lines that investigate from innovative processes and means of industrialized and serial manufacturing, through the experimental validation of subsystems for interconnection and anchoring of floating structures, and even the research and testing of advanced sensorics and monitoring systems.
The project will be developed by ROVER MARITIME S.L. which, as a marine construction company, will contribute its knowledge in the field of construction, contributing to advances in innovative techniques for industrialized and serial construction of floating platforms, together with ESTEYCO S.A., a consultancy backed by more than 50 years of experience, and pioneer in different fields of civil engineering and architecture, especially in the onshore and offshore wind sector, thus providing valuable knowledge for the search and development of new solutions. Also involved is INBERSA INDUSTRIAL RESOURCES S.L., dedicated to the design, manufacture and assembly of metal structures for large works of all kinds, to provide input on research and experimental demonstration of new generation modular transition parts for offshore wind towers, SILBAT ENERGY STORAGE SOLUTIONS, S.L. in charge of researching new storage systems for marine renewable energy and BTP INFRAESTRUCTURAS S.L., with extensive experience in the civil, structural, and geotechnical engineering sector, maritime that will bring value especially regarding the design for the development of the new solution.
Also, it will have the collaboration of the Polytechnic University of Madrid through the Agustín de Betancourt Foundation (FAB), which will carry out the test of the suspension tendons of the innovative technology of floating platform for marine wind turbines.
