Rover inaugurates the new bridge of Alcántara

Rover inaugurated, last Monday, October 20, the new bridge in Alcántara of the EX-117 with the authorities and neighbors of the area. The president of the Junta de Extremadura, María Guardiola, was accompanied by the council of Infrastructures, Transport and Housing, Manuel Martín Castizo, and the mayor of Alcántara, Mónica Grados Caro.  Nearly 200 neighbors also came to witness the inauguration of the new bridge of the municipality, which will be a great improvement in mobility for all.

The infrastructure, which we have built, will provide Alcántara with an improved and modernized access road. The almost two-thousand-year-old Roman bridge, built in 103 AD, was not intended to withstand the passage of trucks daily. The municipality, and Extremadura, needed a structure designed to withstand the large influx of road passengers they have. Rover has solved this need by building this viaduct, for which the Junta de Extremadura has invested more than 23 million euros.

The new viaduct, consists of a metal arch as main element of 180 meters and about 800,000 kg of steel corten. The total structure consists of more than 2 million kilos of this material. In addition, it has been desired to make a wink at the Roman bridge by giving it the shape of an arch. Rover has built a 267-meter “mixed” infrastructure of concrete and steel that exemplifies modernity, fully respecting the old bridge.

This bridge will provide greater safety for passersby and a better connection between both sides of the Tagus river through Alcántara. The Rover project has been celebrated by all, and now Alcántara will keep its Roman bridge without losing this section of connection by the EX117 road. Internally we also celebrate the great work done by the team in planning and executing the new viaduct. Proud of having a staff prepared to face large projects, such as the one that has equipped Alcántara with a new bridge that respects the landscape, preserves history and improves mobility.
