Aicedrone

The AICEDRONE project“ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM APPLIED TO HIGH‑PRECISION GEOMETRIC MODELING IN CIVIL ENGINEERING USING CAMERA AND LIDAR ON DRONES” — developed by Rover Infraestructuras, is במסגרת the 2021 call for grants aimed at research and development projects in artificial intelligence (AI) and other digital technologies, and their integration into value chains (C005/21‑ED) of the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation. These projects are funded through NextGenerationEU European funds under the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan.

The AICEDRONE project is conceived as a system to automate and enhance processes in civil engineering construction, through the development of software tools that integrate the latest advances in AI, drones with onboard sensors (robotics), and high‑performance computing, including laser measurement technologies and computer vision.

The project is scheduled for completion in March 2024, with a total budget exceeding €400,000, and includes the collaboration of the University of Castilla‑La Mancha.

Goals

The main objective of AICEDRONE is to develop a software tool for generating georeferenced 3D digital models of different parts of a construction project throughout all its phases. This will enable both monitoring of its evolution over time and the quantification of final deviations between what has been executed and the original design. The aim is to automate the reconstruction of the basic 3D geometry of elements of interest in civil engineering works.

To achieve this, AI techniques will be used in combination with geometric constraints derived from photogrammetric models and computer vision methods, based on images and 3D point clouds captured using state‑of‑the‑art drones and onboard sensors.

The application fields of Artificial Intelligence are continually expanding, particularly in the identification of elements through image processing algorithms, with the application to three‑dimensional point clouds being relatively recent. Therefore, this project addresses the challenge of combining AI techniques applied to different 3D digital models with the integration of error detection algorithms.

From a technological standpoint, the project proposes combining point cloud detection techniques generated from photogrammetric processes based on high‑resolution images with data obtained from LiDAR sensors, both technologies integrated into drone platforms.
