Works for Phase 1 of the Intermodal Platform in the Sagunto logistics area, Parc Sagunt II
The purpose of the works is the construction of the first phase of an intermodal platform (rail–road) that will connect to the railway branch to the Port of Sagunto, part of the Spanish General Interest Railway Network (RFIG). This infrastructure will enable both the supply of materials and the distribution of products to be carried out via these transport modes.
In this first phase, the following elements are included:
- A 5-track yard (shunting yard) for train classification serving both the VW plant and the logistics tracks.
- The platform for an additional 4-track yard, whose superstructure will be executed in a later phase.
- Two railway access tracks connecting the shunting yard to the VW factory.
- A 2-track technical facility supporting the logistics installation.
- A 2-track logistics terminal, including one slab track, for loading/unloading operations and container storage.
- Two locomotive tracks for parking and refueling.
- A shunting neck for vehicle storage operations.
- Access to the terminal, connecting to the railway link to the Port of Sagunto (currently under construction).
All tracks will feature mixed gauge, enabling operations in both Iberian gauge (towards inland Spain) and standard gauge (connecting to the Mediterranean Corridor). In addition, the tracks fully comply with European interoperability standards, allowing the operation and stabling of 750 m-long trains.
The tracks are electrified at 3 kV DC (in line with the current configuration of the Mediterranean Corridor) and are compatible with future conversion to 25 kV AC. The installation also includes a fully integrated railway signaling system, ensuring full interoperability with the access line to the Port of Sagunto.
The project also includes road access infrastructure, access control systems, and associated buildings required for terminal operation, such as offices, maintenance workshops, technical buildings (transformer substations), and storage yards.
The aim of the project is to establish a freight logistics infrastructure closely linked to the European railway corridor network (TEN‑T), with a strong presence in the Sagunto area, aligned with the development of the VW factory. This will help stimulate the local economy and attract new companies, particularly in the logistics sector.
