Construction of the breakwaters forming the access infrastructure to the Outer Port of the Port of Gdynia, under a design-and-build contract
The project constitutes the first phase of the construction of the breakwaters for the new Outer Port of Gdynia and includes the design and construction of 2.5 km of breakwaters.
For this purpose, 48 reinforced concrete caissons will be manufactured and installed on a foundation berm. The caissons have been designed using wave-reflectivity reduction technology, which helps reduce the reflection of incoming waves within the port basin.
Development of the construction of the breakwaters for the Outer Port of Gdynia
The project to be carried out by RoverPol also includes 300,000 m³ of dredging works, the placement and levelling of 25,000 m³ of foundation berm material, as well as the placement of 30,000 m³ of rock armour to protect the seaward side of the berm.
In addition, the existing breakwater will be reinforced by installing a sheet pile wall along its length and placing a layer of rock armour between the sheet piles and the existing breakwater.
Following approval of the construction design and the granting of the building permit, works began in June 2026, and the first five caissons have already been manufactured.
Thanks to this investment by the Maritime Office in Gdynia, together with the Port Authority, a harbour basin protected from wave action will be created, enabling the construction of the breakwaters and the subsequent operation of the Outer Port. The reinforcement of the existing breakwaters, together with the placement of rock armour, is intended to protect the existing infrastructure from wave action and minimise wave reflection.
